• Remote Desktop 2012 R2 gegen XenApp 6.5

  • Remote Desktop 2012 R2 vs. XenApp 6.5

Citrix has been in the business for over 20 years; the founder and dominator of the multi-user market. The questions are always the same: "Do I need XenApp or XenDesktop - Isn't Microsoft Remote Desktop enough? Do I have to spend a lot of extra money on Citrix?" I was a Microsoft MVP for Remote Desktop Service (RDS) for four years and I remember the last time I was in Redmond. I said some things Microsoft should change or add that have become true with the latest release of Windows server. I never have to "sell" anyone Citrix when RDS is just enough. It always depends, but I think things have changed such that it’s now time to re-think.

  • Remove RawOnly for Citrix Universal Print Server (UPS)

After implementing Citrix Universal Print Server (UPS), you might run quickly into error message "0x00000709", when printing. The reason for that is that Printer vendor set their printer to RawOnly, even the printer can work with different format like EMF. Citrix UPS uses EMF only and the source of the error message.

  • Richtig Microsoft OneDrive in VDI Umgebungen nutzen

  • Optimize user sessions

Stop optimizing the server performance! Optimize the user session!

Quite often customer tells me that they want to optimize the Windows server performance by running some scripts found on the Internet and they are also setting a bunch of registry keys. In my opinion, this is not just dangerous but can also cause issues later and then everybody is analyzing while spending a lot of time. On the other hand, the same customers do nothing to optimize the user session and waste sometimes a lot of resources and again getting more likely issues.

Let me explain why you should NOT care about the server and focus on the user session.

  • The Citrix Director Wish-List

In my opinion, Citrix Director is the best peace in XenDesktop 7 if you don't see it as a replacement for EdgeSight. That is what Citrix does, calls it an EdgeSight replacement but again, in my opinion, was a mistake to do. For customer who really used or still use EdgeSight, the "New" EdgeSight is more or less a joke. For those customers, Citrix must come up with something else or acquire another software or company for it like "Nexthing".

Again, Director "EdgeSight" is a nice integration but here is my list that could be better and let's hope Citrix will do something about it.

  • The importants of time in a Netscaler HA setup

Time is an important value for authentification and other things and the reason to ensure from the beining it's working in your setup. Deploying Citrix Netscaler in a High Availability (HA) paair is very common, especially when we are talking about the VPX editions. First thing you should ensure is that the time between both Netscaler are in sync.

  • Printing rules

The ten printing rules with Citrix

Printing has always been an issue with Citrix, or the Remote Desktop Services (RDS), and still is. Therefore, I have compiled a list of "Printing rules with Citrix" where parts of it also apply to pure Remote Desktop Services. Settings are for XenApp / XenDesktop and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and above, but you will find most or some of the settings work with previous versions, as well.

This is a renewed and extended version; a 2017 edition, if you like.

Twenty years of practical Citrix experience - from 2000 to 2020

I'm celebrating my 20 years work anniversary with Citrix productsas an administrator, consultant, and for the last 14 years as an independent freelancer. I started with MetraFrame 1.1 on Windows server NT 4.0, and back then, it was not easy to keep servers running. Every day I had several BSOD, and it was expected, I could only stabilize the environment by getting rid of third-party printer drivers. Back then, the drivers were executed within the kernel space and quickly crashed servers. The next battle was the Token-Ring Thin Clients with a Citrix Client running on Microsoft MS-DOS! Always a topic, the hardware memory was never enough and expensive....

  • Understanding and Troubleshooting Citrix's Seamless Windows Engine

One of the benefits of a third-party add-on product to Terminal Services such as Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server is published applications with seamless windows. In fact the default setting for MPS 3.0 is to only allow users to access remote servers via published applications.

Most people use seamless windows every day without actually knowing how the technology works. This article will explain how these technical components work and how you can fix seamless windows problems by focusing on Windows 2000/2003 up through MPS 3.0. Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 will work a bit differently, and we’ll discuss that in a future article.
  • Understanding and using Citrix StressPrinters

Many Citrix or terminal server farms have problems with printer drivers and sometimes even the Administrator is not aware of that. Drivers that are not 100% multiuser aware can have a bad influence in many different ways. Often those buggy drivers can slow down the login process or cause high CPU consumption. In worst cases, printer drivers can even stop the login process for the whole server, kill the spooler service or can cause a blue screen of death (very rare with Windows 2003 and up). For the first two issues, the Citrix health monitor can help tracking the problem.

  • Understanding the Citrix MetaFrame Logon and Logoff Process

TThe Windows logon and logoff process is a complex part of a Terminal Server environment, and these processes are complicated even more when Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server is installed. However, knowing how these processes really work can cut down your troubleshooting time.

This article can’t cover all aspects and every detail of the logon and logoff processes. However, it will take a look at these processes from an administrator’s standpoint (as opposed to taking a developer’s perspective).

The first part of this article covers the session initialization. It covers the steps that take place from the time a client tries to connect until the application shows up on the user’s desktop. (Note that we’re only talking about the actual connection from the client to the server. We are not talking about application enumeration or load balancing since those activities take place before a client connects to a server.)

The second part of this article will cover the disconnection and logoff processes.
