Pin an item to the Windows taskbar

news winaero

MIn one of its finest moments, Microsoft came up with the new Jump List, which can be „pinned“ to objects (shortcuts). This is all rubbish, not only because it uses a binary registry value and the corresponding shortcut must be in the right place, but also because it can’t even be done via Group Policy.

Anyone looking into this will find scripts (VB, PowerShell) for it online. Even Citrix has a built-in script to clean up the jump list during login. The PowerShell script has its limitations and is just junk designed to fix Microsoft’s junk—junk used to fix junk. Creating a link based on an EXE is simple, but creating shortcuts with parameters or specific shell commands is a whole different story.

I searched, tried different things, and so on, just to do something simple: Add a shortcut to the jump list for all users of the command line! I had almost given up when I found a simple and free tool found that it met my needs exactly. This little tool is great! It can be launched from a network share and point to a shortcut on a network share. The tool also checks to make sure that a shortcut isn't created twice and automatically deletes the extra link.

Citrix should buy the code and turn it into something useful so that Citrix admins can easily create shortcuts in the Jump List.

The tool is from Winaero and is called „Pin 8“But they also have something for 7 😉”
