20 years of hands-on Citrix experience – 2000 to 2020

20 Jahre Citrix Erfahrung

I’m celebrating my 20th anniversary with Citrix products—first as an administrator and consultant, and for the past 14 years as an independent freelancer. I started out with Citrix MetaFrame 1.1 on Windows Server NT 4.0, And back then, keeping the systems up and running was anything but easy. Every day I had several BSODs (Blue Screen of Death)—system crashes—which was to be expected. The only way I could stabilize the environment was by removing all third-party printer drivers.

Back then, printer drivers were still loaded into the kernel’s memory space and would quickly cause the system to crash. My next battle was with the Token Ring thin clients running a Citrix client based on Microsoft MS-DOS! Whatever the issue was, it always came down to the hardware—never enough RAM and, on top of that, expensive. That was a long time ago, and a lot has changed in technology, just as it has in my life, but there were things back then that are still an issue today! We now have the paperless office… No, of course I’m just kidding, and printing is still a problem even today. What about the expensive RAM? Memory is cheap, but not in the cloud! Okay, but at least the clunky, DOS-based Citrix client… Hmm, now that I think about it, the DOS client worked, but I’m not so sure about the Citrix Workspace app!?

For more than 20 years, I have successfully helped Citrix customers and their administrators resolve their issues, and for many years Citrix has recognized my work with the CTP Award. When customers hire me, other consultants have often already looked into the problem—sometimes even Microsoft and Citrix themselves. I really enjoy my work, and I’m sure that will continue to be the case. I’ve made many friends along the way, but contact has rarely been maintained.

By the way, a „Hello“To Shawn, Jay, Garry, Jeff, Thomas, Benny, Thorsten, Nico, Brian, Ron, Brad, and many more! Thanks to everyone who has supported me over the years, to my clients, visitors to my website, and the attendees of my many presentations!”

Addendum

About 18 years ago, I wrote several pages about the Windows login process and put together a white paper on the topic. Even today, we’re still struggling with the login process, and just a few days ago I helped a client with it. So here’s my article on the „Common login issues and how to fix them!
